This article from houzz.com provides great iinformation on how to keep children safe around pools and spas during the hot summer season.  Every summer you hear of tragic accidents with children drowning.  Statistics show that over 400 children die each year in accidental drowning, with 87% of these occuring in residential pools/spas.

According to Ellyn Pollack, campaign leader for Pool Safety, a public education campaign run by the Consumer Porduct Safety Commission (CPSC) that works to reduce child drownings and other incidents in swimming pools and spas, "Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for 1-4 year olds, and every one of them is preventable."

Below is a list of recommendations to help prevent this devasting accident from happening at your home:

  1. Teach kids to swim.  It is good excercise and significantly reduces the possibility of drowning.
  2. Designate a water watcher.  Adult supervision is key.  It is imperative that this individual be vigilant in watching the children in the pool...no texting, phone calls or reading.  Have 15-30 minute shifts.  Adults should know how to conduct CPR in the event of an accident...this can make the difference between life & death.
  3. Fences/Walls.  Fences come in a variety of styles and materials, but they should be at least 4' high and nonclimable; the gate should be self closing and self latching, and it should swing away from the pool so that kids aren't able to push it open if it fails to latch.  Glass enclosures can create an open environment while still provide the proper safety features.
  4. Safety nets or automatic pool covers.
  5. Door Alarms.  These should be installed in conjunction with a fence.

Pools can be a great summer activity...just be sure to implement these safety precautions to ensure a safe experience!
