This article from houzz.com provides an overview of the top 10 things you need to consider when remodeling your bathroom.

  1. Plumbing.  Consider upgrading to 2" pipes to help reduce clogging.  In cold climates make sure the water supply lines are not routed through an exterior wall.
  2. Lighting.  Recessed lighting is a great option for bathrooms.  Make sure to include 1-2 recessed lights in your bathtub/shower.  Also consider installing a dimmer switch so you can adjust the lighting to your mood.
  3. Medicine cabinets.  If you have the room a recessed medicine cabinet is the way to go.  If not, make sure the cabinet does not interfere with the functionality of the vanity.
  4. Wall-hung Toilet.  These are the new craze...they have become affordable and the tank is hidden behind the wall!
  5. Window in the shower.  A great feature to allow natural light in, however, remember to use an obscure glass and make sure the sill is tilted to allow for water drainage and the proper materials are used to ensure rotting and rust do not occur.
  6. Shower sills.  Make sure it is sloped properly for proper drainage.  Solid materials such as stone or quartz work best.
  7. Shower floors.  Smaller tiles provide a safer surface.  Consider textured tile for a more slip resistant surface.
  8. Shower bases.  Modern shower bases are constructed of acrylic or porcelain.
  9. Drawer storage.  Consider installing a vanity with drawer storage rather than doors. Drawers are easier to access and easier to organize
  10. Shower or tub?  Ask yourself how many baths you have taken in the last year?  If the answer is "not very many" you may want to consider installing a large shower with safety bars and a bench. Consider one of the new sliding barn style shower doors for that trendy look.

These great tips should help you design the bathroom of your dreams!  It can be your own personal utopia!
